40th Parallel Marker

From Main, 2/1/2 miles northwest on K-7. Stop here to read the historical marker that relates the story of the Public Land Surveys of the Sixth Principal Meridian. From here, another 120 yards north on K-7 a little footbridge leads to a path that takes you 150 feet to the top of the bluff (handrails help navigate the steep grade). At this hilltop you'll see the cast iron monument erected in May 1855 by U.S. Deputy Surveyor Charles Manners to mark the beginning point of the 40th Parallel--the border between the future state of Nebraska and Kansas.

Albany Historical Museum

The Albany townsite was laid out in 1859, and although the town never incorporated, it was a thriving trade center between Seneca and Hiawatha. It was also known as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and it was here that John Brown spent his last night in Kansas. Today the museum complex comprises 15 buildings including the two-story Old Albany Schoolhouse (NRHP), which houses a collection of artifacts. Don't miss seeing the 130 year-old sawmill in operation. Starting from Main St. in Sabetha, go 2 1/4 miles north on 6th (becomes X4).

Bancroft Depot Museum

The depot museum is housed in one of only two surviving depots that served the Kansas City, Wyandotte and Northwestern Railroad from 1887 to 1919. Moved about a block to this location, the depot includes railroad memorabilia, but its primary exhibits relate to the Bancroft community. The museum will be open during daylight hours. To access the museum, walk across the road to the Davis Auto Clinic on Thursday and Friday anytime during the day and on Saturday until noon and they'll open the museum for you. #onlyinasmalltown

Barnes Reading Room

This small community is mighty proud of the Barnes Reading Room. Francis Barnes, a furniture dealer and undertaker in Everest from 1886 until his death in 1907, left the bulk of his estate to Everest for construction of a library building. The Barnes Reading Room was completed in 1910. The library is enjoyed by young and old alike and continues to be wonderful asset to this small town. Open May 6 and 7 from 3:30-6:30pm and May 8 from 9am-12pm.

In 2014, 59 signs were installed to make the California Trail through the county. To find the first trail marker, from S. 3rd in Wathena, go 1/4 mile east and south on U.S. 36, just east on Saint Joseph, then north on Treece. Proceed to subsequent markers by following the arrows. You will end up east of Fanning at K-7 and 230.

In 1918, when T.H. Korthanke and his wife moved to their home at 200 Miami, a stately maple tree stood on the property. Korthanke was inspired to plant seeds from this tree, and as the seedlings grew he shared them with anyone who agreed to care for them. As a result, mature maples grow all around town and give Hiawatha a beautiful red-maple glow in the fall. (On map, Miami St. might show as 240th St.)

Civil War Cannon & Veterans Memorial - Hiawatha

Just inside the gate of the cemetery is a Civil War era cannon, circa 1865. It is surrounded by the graves of 18 Civil War veterans. At the northeast corner of the cemetery is a veteran's memorial for soldiers of all wars, the latest from the Iraqi War.

Clock Tower Building

The unique clock tower was built in 1891 as part of the First National Bank. The two-story, red-brick building with limestone trim and arched windows is a beautiful example of Richardson Romanesque architecture. It was restored in 2010 to become the Frances Sewell Plamann History Center. City hall now occupies the first floor, and featured on the second floor along with temporary art exhibits is the colorful 1963 Ron Allerton mural depicting the history of Brown County. Crossdale Barn

Look closely at the white prairie style barn to notice the coat of arms under the hay hood. In 1855 President Franklin Pierce gave Abigail Crossdale this section of land as recompense for her husband's death in the War of 1812. Because she lived in the East, Abigail sold the land never having seen it. In the 1950s, barn owner Wayne Starr created this Crossdale coat of arms in her honor. It's okay to pull up to the barn for a close view.

Davis Memorial

It's rather startling to find this incredible memorial so casually situated within the town cemetery. John Davis erected it for his wife, Sarah who died in 1930. By 1934, the memorial contained 11 life-sized statues made of Italian marble and covered by a marble canopy. The statues depict stages of John and Sarah's lives. Controversy surrounds the memorial to this day. Why did Davis, known to be a frugal man, spend so much money on a memorial? Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Duane Kreiensieck Barn Quilts

Robinson is part of the quilt trail movement thanks to the skillful work of Duane Kreiensieck. Duane’s project began several years ago when he and his wife Nancy became interested in the barn quilts. Over the years, Duane has designed, built, and painted quilts that are publicly displayed on barns, mailboxes, and parks, as well as in private homes. Working on wood, he creates quilts that range from 16 inches to 8 foot squares. E.N. Morrill Gravesite

E.N. Morrill was the 13th Governor of Kansas (1895-97), and was Hiawatha's pre-eminent citizen of the time, both before and after the Civil War. He started the Morrill and Janes Bank in 1870, which was the first state bank chartered in Kansas. At the Mount Hope Cemetery, north of the Davis Memorial take the branch to your right and continue to the Morrill family cemetery plot. Elizabeth Krebs has been dubbed the mother of the modern day Halloween activities starting in Hiawatha in the early part of the 20th Century, and which spread across the nation. The Halloween Frolic had its beginnings in 1914 with Elizabeth Krebs taking the lead to change the night of Halloween from pranks and vandalism to one of treats and games. Elwood Library - Lincoln School

Elwood's Lincoln School was the last building in Doniphan County to be used for racially segregated education. The school replaced McKinley School, which burned in 1934, and served African American students in the Elwood area from 1935 to 1955, when it closed as a result of the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1954 that outlawed racially segregated educational facilities. The building is one of the community's few older buildings, as this area is prone to major floods associated with the nearby Missouri River. In the years after its closure, it served as a community building and library. It is listed on the State of Kansas Registry of Historic Places. It currently houses the Doniphan County Library branch in Elwood. The library's hours for the Elwood branch: Thursday-Friday 11am-6pm.

This byway leads you to some of the oldest towns in Kansas, treats you to early architecture and historic sites, and presents accounts of major events including the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Pony Express. Interpretive signage stops include a covered kiosk by the river along K-7 in White Cloud, Iowa Point (on east side of K-7 near White Cloud) and at the Troy Community Building, 1217 Last Chance Rd., Troy.

In 1914 a meeting in Frankfort, Kansas established the Great White Way, a 1,161 mile route from Chicago to Colorado Springs. Originally poles were painted white to help guide tourists. As you drive Highway 9 note the white and black bands painted on the telephone poles. Highway 9, stretching from the east to the west borders of Nemaha County through the communities of Centralia, Corning, Goff and Wetmore.

Formerly in the city park you'll now find the gray granite 1910 fountain at its new home at 6th and Main. It stands as a testament to an early Seneca mayor who persuaded Hermon Lee Ensign, founder of the National Humane Alliance, to donate one of his fountains to the town. Between 1906 and 1911 Ensign donated 125 fountains nationwide to provide drinking water for horses and other animals. It is one of the few few remaining in the United States.

A plaque on a red glacial rock marks the site of the Kickapoo Presbyterian Mission established in 1856. Lake Nemaha Dam Guardrails

Lake Nemaha was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which finished the job with artistic guardrails stretching across the spillway. The Miller Family and descendants have lived on this farmstead since 1855. Wagon trains full of settlers often camped on their land before heading to parts farther west. Sadly, one wagon was rejected from joining the train after discovering their daughter had small pox. The Millers provided them baskets of food each day and later after the child passed away, they gave their permission to bury her in the Miller family cemetery. Unfortunately, no one recalls her name but a stone was placed at her grave in 1974 with the inscription "1st Grave-Wagon Train-Small Pox-1854-1857." You are welcome to visit her grave and remember this brave little girl and her family. From Main and 5th in Everest, go 1/2 mile east and follow curve to the north for about 1/4 mile then east on Highway 20 (120th St) for nearly 3 miles, turn north on Timber Rd for 1/4 mile. Cemetery is on the west side of the road. Find her grave to the very back on the northeast side. Look for a pole with a pink ribbon wrapped around it. A small gray marker is beside it.

The City of Troy has a well-equipped playground near the Leonard L. Clary Community Building located on the west side of Troy. In addition to the playground, there are covered benches, a deluxe charcoal grill, and picnic tables. The 4-H pond is just over the hill. Visitors could walk around the pond, have a picnic, go fishing, or bring a kayak or canoe to paddle around in the pond. Another fun playground is located at the Troy Community Park on Myrtle St. (between Park and Centre Streets) This park also features a historic bridge, picnic shelter, restrooms, native grass and wildflower patch, and trails.

"From the organization of the Underground Railroad in Topeka in 1857 until slavery was abolished, Albany served as a station on the Railroad line. Fugitive slaves were secreted by day and taken by “conductors” at night to the next station. It is said that slaves were hidden in the hay of the livery stables near the sawmill, in the woodshed behind the Albany store, or in a cave above the Pony Creek ford." The limestone bank, called White Banks, where the cave is located is on the east side of the Pony Creek Lake. White Banks can be seen from the 208th Road and Highway 75 intersection. "Men and Wheat" is the title of this 1940 Section artwork, an oil on canvas by Joe Jones that portrays two farmers harvesting wheat. A sign outside the post office tells an interesting backstory--after the mural was installed the local International Harvest dealer complained that the green equipment was an advertisement for John Deere. So the artist repainted the combine International red, and on the green tractor he painted his own name as the logo. Rubeti Memorial & Ghost

The brick wall bearing the Highland College name stands as a memorial to Sophie Rubeti, a young Sac of the Iowa and Sac & Fox Mission. A plaque tells Sophie's story and why, following her death around 1861 at age 18, a lodge for Indian girls was built in her honor. When the lodge was razed in 1978, the hand-hewn bricks from its fireplace were used to build the memorial wall. Over the many years Rubeti Lodge was inhabited, sightings of Sophie’s ghost were often reported. The College’s auditorium, which now stands where the Lodge was, has also had sightings of Sophie roaming the halls.

How did the only city in the world named Sabetha come to have that name? A plaque on the north side of a building share the theory that a Greek scholar-turned-goldseeker was in this area when one of his two one died on the Sabbath. Unable to go farther, he pitched a tent, performed last rites for his faithful ox, and named the site Sabetha in honor of the day his ox died.

Little is known about it except that the Shauls' son George was an architect who built Carnegie libraries, Masonic halls, and courthouses, and possibly this memorial for his parents. Drive carefully through the cemetery as gravestones closely border the driveway. From U.S. 36, go 1/2 mile north on 11th (becomes J Road).

In 2017, the field was renamed the Sergeant Major Wilbur Bestwick Field in honor of Mr. Bestwick, a Sabetha native who was the first Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. On Thursday, May 7, Sabetha High School will host Hiawatha to a double header. Games start at 4:30pm. Please come out to the ballpark located about ½ mile east of Highway 75 on 192nd street. We encourage you to check out this gem of public artwork tucked into a small plaza at the Citizen State Bank in Hiawatha. The steel sculpture rises 15 feet into the air and weighs 750 pounds! It "represents a three-dimensional representation of the growth and progress of the community of Hiawatha." The artist, James K. Johnson, was born in Bristow, Oklahoma and attended Emporia State and later received a degree in art education from the University of Kansas. Mr. Johnson taught high school art at Hiawatha for 1963 to 1966. The sculpture was installed in 1972.

A single spire acts as a magnet drawing you to St. Bede's Church in Kelly. It stands on the highest point in the area and is surrounded by cropland and a small cluster of buildings. It's worth going out of your way to see the interior of this 1915 Gothic church, built of brick with limestone trim. The stained glass windows from Munich, Germany, are fine examples of 19th-century art, and the painted ceiling is breathtaking. Notice the sounding board (looks like an umbrella) above the ambo (a raised stand formerly used for reading the Gospel). Take a 30 minute tour on Saturday at 10am. Sunday Mass, 8am.

St. Martha's A.M.E. Church

It is believed that African Americans settled in Doniphan County around 1860. This simple frame church, built around 1882, was named for Martha Hubbard, a former slave who escaped to Kansas from Missouri via the Underground Railroad. Sycamore Springs is located on the border of Brown and Nemaha counties. It was an important stop for settlers traveling westward in the 1800’s. By 1880, the mineral water and beautiful scenery around the area became well known, and Sycamore Springs earned a reputation as a health resort, offering “healing waters” for visitors. Over the years, several structures were built to provide accommodations for convalescing guests, but only one remains: the charming 1920’s hotel, an icon from days gone by. As time passed, Sycamore Springs was developed into a resort, offering camping, picnicking, roller skating, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Recently purchased by new owners, they will offer guided tours on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8 at 10am and 4pm each day. There will be no charge for the tours. Roller skating and miniature golfing will be available on Friday and Saturday to tour participants. It will be $10/person/day. The roller rink and golf course will be closed on Sunday. Camping, fishing, hiking and self guided tours are available Thursday, May 6 - Sunday, May 9. Camping may be extended, if desired. Camping and normal amenities fees will be charged to campers.

Tile Murals

Look closely! The tiles on the United Bank and Trust exterior are each only about an inch square and are assembled into six murals depicting area history. They include a farmer and horse plowing a cornfield, a farm tractor, dairy cows, a factory, and a steer. The artist is unknown, but the project occurred in 1965 when the bank was forced to remodel due to water leakage.

The Wathena Fruit Growers' Association Building was built in 1909 in downtown Wathena. The building is located near the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific and the St. Joseph and Grand Island railroad lines that allowed farmers to ship their produce to markets west, northwest, and southwest of Wathena. The two-story Commercial-style building built in 1909, served as a central meeting place for the fruit growers who worked for a consistent and fair market in which to sell their produce. The association owned the building until 1945 when it was sold to the Farmers' State Bank.

An etching of a galloping horse and rider adorns the granite gravestone of Pony Express rider Don Clarence Rising (1844-1909), aka Johnny Granada. His grave is at the south end of the cemetery about eight stones north on the first row of the east side.

Wilbur Chapman Monument

In front of the Christian church, a bronze plaque set in a unique stone pedestal pays tribute to Wilbur Chapman and relates a most unusual story of this 10-year-old boy and his pig, Pete. In 1913 Wilbur sold his prized pig to raise money for a leper colony. This news of one boy's generosity captured the public's fancy, and soon school children throughout the world began collecting money for this worthy cause. They saved their coin in, what else, little iron banks shaped like a black pig-created in memory of Pete. The 1880 brick home, 308 Chestnut, where Wilbur grew up is sometimes referred to as the Gingerbread House.

Three properties in Horton are excellent examples of WPA era including the Bureau of Indian Affairs Agency building constructed in 1942. "The Bureau of Indian Affairs is a rarity among Federal agencies. With roots reaching back to the Continental Congress, the BIA is almost as old as the United States itself. As Federal policy has changed from notions of subjugating and assimilating American Indians and Alaska Natives, so the BIA’s mission has changed as well. Its role now is as a partner with tribes to help them achieve their goals for self-determination while also maintaining its responsibilities under the Federal-Tribal trust and government-to-government relationships."
