From the museum 1/2 mile east on U.S. Hwy. 40, 3/4 mile south on 27, then 3/4 mile east on E-O. The post cemetery is at the back of the larger city cemetery. A marker beside the flagpole provides a timeline and layout of the fort. Grave sites of two scouts and early civilians can be seen. A tall stone cenotaph (inside an open-faced shed) was erected by members of he Seventh U.S. Cavalry in memory of comrades lost during the Indian battles of 1867.

You'll see first-class exhibits about area paleontology, including a 40-foot long replica of a plesiosaur fossil discovered by a fort surgeon in 1867, learn about the American Indian connection, and how William Comstock, Wild Bill Hickok, George Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody put their stamp on the fort's history. A separate gallery displays an impressive collection of American Indian and military artifacts amid the striking artwork of western and wildlife artist Jerry Thomas. Stroll through a professionally designed three-quarter scale street facade of the fort and early Wallace. The newest addition houses the large Rhea Reed (pump) Organ collection dating from 1848 to 1918. The museum complex includes a stagecoach station, train depot, pioneer and agricultural equipment shed and an 1888 church. The entrance features the artwork of barbed-wire artist Ernie Poe and a life-size bronze of scout William Comstock by artist Jerry Thomas.

At 4,039 feet above sea level, Mount Sunflower is the highest point in Kansas. Located in Wallace County, just east of the Kansas-Colorado border, Mount Sunflower is more than 3,300 feet above the state's topographic low point in Montgomery County in southeastern Kansas. Much of Mount Sunflower's elevation is due to the uplift of the Rocky Mountains to the west. Mount Sunflower is on private property, but the landowners, Ed and Cindy Harold, accommodate visitors who want to conquer its lofty summit and gaze at a typical High Plains, shortgrass prairie landscape.
